Nowadays materials based on aliphatic polyesters attract much attention due to their biodegradation and biocompatibility. The ring opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters using metal complexes as initiators is the most used method for synthesis of such materials due to reproducibility and reaction control. Development of new catalysts of such process is the actual problem for modern coordination chemistry. In the course of this work we obtained a series of zinc complexes based on substituted phenanthroline ligands. The series of novel heterocyclic ligands were prepared via nucleophilic substitution of one or two of chlorine atoms in 4,7-dichloro-2,9-dimethyl[1,10]phenanthroline. The target complexes were synthesised by mixing of equimolar amounts of ligand and zinc salt (acetate or trifluoroacetate). The structure of target compounds was investigated in solution by NMR spectroscopy and in solid state by X-ray analysis. The complexes obtained were tested as initiators for ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters (ε-caprolactone, D,L-lactide) and exhibited high catalytic activity (Mn = 25000 – 43000, PDI 1.20 – 2.00).
