Aerosols significantly impact the regional environment, including climate change, specifically in periods of extensive biomass burning (BB). Quantification of BB emissions is in the focus of current research and abatement strategies, especially given that the impacts of BB on regional air quality in highly populated areas are remaining rather uncertain. The composition and microstructure of BB emissions in Son La and BaVi regions, Vietnam, are analyzed during dry seasons of 2013 and 2015. A wide range of observed PM2.5 mass concentrations are categorized according to the smoke level, supported by the evolution of carbon fractions (OC and EC). Emissions and properties of BB aerosols are found highly source-dependent, depending on burning practice, combustion phase (open flaming vs. smoldering), and type of biomass.
