Graphynes are a family of carbon allotropes containing only sp and sp2 carbons. Within this family, γ-graphyne is the simplest, containing a 1:1 ratio of sp to sp2 carbons.1 Synthesis of γ-graphyne via Sonogashira cross-coupling of 1,3,5-tribromo-2,4,6-triethynylbenzene (TBTEB) was first demonstrated in 2022.2 The resulting morphology of the bulk-synthesized graphyne was not useful for device fabrication, understanding the novel material’s properties, or exfoliating single layers. In parallel to efforts to synthesize γ-graphyne at a liquid/liquid interface, this project was started to explore selective catalytic hydrogenation as a chemical means of modification with the potential for layer separation.
