Psychological analysis of rotation work asks for new theoretical approaches. Work settings with rotational organization fully deserve to be predicated as ―extreme‖ – here, very unusual and stressful work conditions are coupled with negative climatic, geophysical, and technological factors. Specialized analysis schemes have to be developed to study work under rotational organization, which would adequately describe the impact of extreme conditions on worker‘s physical and psychological state as well as worker‘s adaptation to them. In this talk, empirical studies of workers‘ at oil drilling platforms in the Russian Far North will be presented. It will be in particular shown that subjective appraisal of extreme factors is an important variable, mediating the dynamics of adaptation to social and physical environment. Conclusions about implementing programs of psychological support and rehabilitation for these types of work settings will be discussed.
