The strategy for the design of thermo- and pH-sensitive polymer films and coatings based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) interpenetrating network (IPN) microgels is presented. For this purpose PNIPAM/ PAA microgels with IPN structure were synthesized by in situ copolymerization of acrylic acid and N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide within PNIPAM microgel particles obtained by thermo-induced precipitation polymerization. Polymer films were developed by assembling of IPN gel particles on the different substrates during solvent evaporation and further temperature treatment. In some cases, polymer films were additionally crosslinked by multivalent ions to enhance their insolubility in aqueous solutions. Inner structure and thermo- and pH- induced swelling behavior of obtained materials was investigated. Absorption and thermo-induced release of organic dyes by presented polymer films were studied to demonstrate the potential possibilities of their application.
