Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells, isolated from bone marrow or adipose tissue (ADSC), enhance tissue regeneration upon transplantation, by guiding resident stem cells amplification and differentiation as well as by stimulating the growth of blood vessels and nerves. Transplantation of human ADSCs to immunodeficient NUDE mice stimulated the growth of recipient-derived (mouse) vessels without significant incorporation of transplanted cells. This allowed us to suggest that ADSCs effects on regeneration are mostly mediated by their ability to produce a wide range of bioactive molecules (growth factors, cytokines, etc.). Further experiments have confirmed that the ability of ADSC to stimulate the growth of blood vessels and nerves depends on their secretory activity. The search for active fraction in ADSC secretome has revealed the number of bioactive molecules, which play a pivotal role in tissue regeneration. Furthermore, important roles in regenerative action of ADSC play extracellular vesicles produced by these cells.
