Аннотация:You might wonder why we have confined ourselves to this particular period. The answer to that question lies in understanding of the fact that before 1991, which marked the collapse of the Soviet Union, American presidential rhetoric targeted the only villain, socialism, in the guise of the USSR, but after 1991 American presidential discourse had to seek new targets and hence to create new myths and mythographs to sustain presidential power and justify geopolitical steps taken. Therefore the research objective was to provide insights into how myths transform over time and what other myths emerged and how these transformations manifested themselves in the language.
The material for research was texts of the U.S. Presidents’ official addresses from 1990 to 2015, including the Inaugural Addresses, the State of the Union Addresses, Addresses to the United Nations Assemblies and occasional statements. The scope of the material amounts to 53 texts, which is a total of 365 pages.
The relevance of research consists of examining the underexplored area of political linguistics and exploiting the interdisciplinary character of the investigation.
