Long-term phases of increased and decreased annual
and seasonal water flow (respective to the normal,
calculated for the entire period of observation) for
representative rivers of the forest-steppe and steppe
zones of the Russian Plain were identified on the basis of
the analysis of their long-term series (covering last 70-
80 years). The time limits of the contrast phases were
determined based on normalized cumulative deviation
curves. The duration of the phases is mainly in the range
of 20 to 40 years. Contrast phases are characterized by
significant difference in water flow, which reaches several
hundred percent. Three main types of multi-year changes
in the long-term phases of increased and decreased annual
and seasonal water flow were revealed by the similarity
and difference in the sequence of their replacement.
