A hypothesis is formulated regarding the possible role of iron ions in the changes that the composition of nucleoprotein-DNA complexes and their magnetic properties undergo in certain phases of the cell cycle. The main idea of the hypothesis is the assumption that iron ions change the composition of the complexes formed by phosphate groups of DNA as they efficiently replace cationic amino groups of organic ligands in such complexes by the competitive ligand substitution mechanism. Then, iron ions can be removed from the complexes with DNA by changing the charge of DNA-bound iron ions in redox reactions and their transition into mobile complexes, or by the formation and subsequent removal of weakly charged magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. Such magnetic nanoparticles can cause magnetic effects in cells, e.g., can give rise to broad EPR lines, which are characteristic of ferromagnetic systems and were discovered by L.A.Blumenfeld with colleagues in the spectra of DNA preparations and cell cultures early in the cell division.
