Аннотация:The phenomenal progress in computer technology over the last fifty or sixty years has forced scientists and engineers to look critically into the possibility of pushing for the limits in information processing and storage. Indeed, an answer to this challenge has been the approach of looking at the feasibility of addressing, manipulating, measuring and processing atoms, ions and photons at the individual or collective level. This amalgamation of information theory with quantum mechanics has given rise to the new discipline of quantum information science.
Over the last twenty years, there have been several theoretical and experimental breakthroughs in this field. We now understand better how entanglement acts as a resource for quantum processing. We now have better tools for probing properties of quantum systems like spin chains. We now can explore quantum gates and quantum algorithms involving a low number of qubits. We now have devices based on quantum cryptography as a viable commercial product.
In this special issue on quantum information science, we survey some of the recent developments in this field: from quantum imaging to decoherence theory.
This collection does not represent a complete survey of the field in recent years: it would have been difficult or impossible. Rather it publishes a variety of papers on different topics showing the wide ramifications of the field.
