An isothermal (T= 1273 K) section of the Zr-Al-N phase diagram is constructed using physicochemical analysis, thermodynamic analysis, and the simulation of phase equilibria. The AlN phase is found to exist in equilibrium with ZrAl3, ZrAl2, and ZrN, and the complex Zr 3AlN nitride is found to be in equilibrium with ZrN, Zr 5Al3N1-x, and the α-Zr solid solution. The phases that are based on binary compounds of the Zr-Al system from Zr 2Al3 to the β-Zr solid solution are in equilibrium with the ternary Zr5Al3N1-x phase. The α-Zr solid solution contains up to 14 at % Al. The Gibbs energies of formation of ternary compounds are found at 1273 K to be as follows: 1/6ΔfG(Zr3AlN) = -76.0 kJ/mol and [1/(9 - x)]ΔfG(Zr5Al3N1-x) = -63.0 kJ/mol.
