An equation is derived for calculating the interfacial tension of the mercury electrode during discharge of an ion being adsorbed specifically. The adsorption of the discharging ion is assumed to correspond to the Grahame-Parsons model, and the equilibrium potential at the mercury-solution interface is thought to obey the Nernst equation. The potential dependences of the equilibrium capacitance, electrode charge, specific adsorption, and interfacial tension of mercury during discharge of the Tl+ cations on mercury from solutions of a mixed electrolyte are calculated with the aid of the model. A fresh interpretation is proposed for the two-humped electrocapillary curves that were observed experimentally at the interface between the mercury electrode and an aqueous 0.1 M TlF + 0.7 M NaF solution. © 1998 MAHK Hayka/Interperiodica Publishing.
