This article looks at the biblical precept that calls for the corporal punishment of children. The author argues that the precept can be understood only by looking into the biblical notions of “sorrow”, “patience”, “experience”, and “hope”. The Hebrew word tiqvah contains the necessary prerequisite without which the punishment is not effective or useful. By using hermeneutic analysis, the author offers in-depth interpretation of notions under consideration, and advanced understanding of king Solomon’s saying, advocating corporate punishment.
Keywords: Hope, experience, patience, sorrow, tiqvar, corporate punishment, biblical precept.
