An empirical model of atmospheric circulation in the tropics is presented based on generalizing the whole complex of aerological and synoptic information on wind for the three ENSO events (1982-83, 1986-87, and 1991). The evolution of circulation characteristics is discussed on the basis of the analysis of distribution of the divergent wind velocity potential, stream function, and vertical velocity analog. It has been shown that the characteristic feature of the ENSO evolution cycle is the formation and subsequent disappearance of the developed system of the intertropical convergence zone, with its intense vertical motions spread to the upper troposphere, over the entire tropical Pacific. The manifestation of main anomalies of the circulation characteristic distribution in averaged fields points to a common nature and a stable character of the event evolution. ©1997 by Allerton Press, Inc.
