Аннотация:Abstract: The article examines the nature of the transformation of the social status of the university teachers in the period of social and economic reform of the country and the modernization of higher education. For the first time, a three-stage sociological study was conducted involving 274 teachers and 215 students of Russian State Social University (RSSU) for 7 years (2009-2016). A comprehensive analysis of the results of sociological surveys of teachers and students of RSSU and official statistics allowed revealing the dynamics of the status characteristics of teachers of Russian universities. There was revealed a significant tightening of the requirements set by the university for the teachers, an aggravation of the competition in the professional sphere. This led to cardinal changes in the sphere of labor and employment of the university teachers. The hypothesis was confirmed that changes in the social status of teachers are contradictory.
