Аннотация:The issue of objective evaluation of ethno-cultural identity acquires a
crucial importance in modern multicultural societies. Ethno-cultural
identity is defined as an integrity, which contained several components
(cognitive, affective, religious, and geographical). The aim of this study
was to develop an objective method of ethno-cultural identity investigation
based on eye tracking technology. Itwas assumed that relevant to the
ethnic group symbols will be detected faster and will attract more
attention than irrelevant during visual search task. A flicker paradigm for
inducing changed-blindnesswas used to test our assumption. The images
of flags of 150 countries were selected as symbols of ethnic groups and
then were grouped in matrices (3x3 images each matrix). Some of them
contained relevant flag in one of 9 positions and other contained only
irrelevant flags. 54 matrices were presented to each participant. The
perceptive characteristics of matrices were the same. Experimental
procedure consisted of presenting two matrices for 3 s each over,
between which was shown the mask screen for 500 ms. The participant’s
task was to notice the possible changing of a flag. Participants were 17
students aged 19-21 years of the same ethnicity. During experimental
process the eye movements were recorded. Dwell times in the regions of
flags, fixation count and revisits count were significantly (pb0,01) higher
for relevant flag, moreover the frequency of changes detection linked to
the relevant flag was also higher compared to irrelevant flags (83% and
34% respectively). The first fixation times both for relevant flags and
irrelevant flags look similar and were not significantly differ. In other
words previously subjects detected the complex of perceptive characteristics
(color, presence and direction of the stripes). Then however their
gaze did not stay for a long time in the regions of irrelevant flag in
comparison with gaze behavior in the regions of relevant flag. Probably,
participants recognized the irrelevant flags as insignificant for them,
because these flags did not belong to them. Thus suggestedmethod based
on eye movement parameters allow to objective distinguish whether
some symbols of ethnic groups are significant for people. Through this
way it is possible to investigate the cognitive component of etho-cultural
identity. This study was supported by RSF (15-18-00109).
