Reactions between oppositely charged network and linear polyelectrolytes in aqueous media have been investigated. Sorption of linear polyelectrolytes by polyelectrolyte gels takes place as an interpolymer cooperative reaction with the formation of an interpolymer complex of a definite composition that remains stable over a wide range of pH and of ionic strength of the solutions. The complete fracture of interchain salt bonds is accompanied by desorption of linear polyelectrolytes from the gels and by reduction of the transparency and high swelling capacities of the initial gels. The compositions of polycomplexes between linear and network polyelectrolytes (unlike those between linear polyelectrolytes) are not controlled by initial ratios of the polymer reactants, and depend solely on their degree of ionization. The network character of one of the reactants results in a nonuniform distribution of linear polyelectrolyte inside the polyelectrolyte gel. © 1990.
