The authors examine the interaction of poly-N,N′-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate with a polysilicic acid sol in dilute aqueous solutions at different pH of the medium. It is shown that depending on pH of the medium and composition of the mixture of polyelectrolytes in the system both soluble and insoluble polycomplexes may form. In weakly alkaline and neutral media (7≤pH≤9) the polycationic fractions form with the polysilicic acid and sol insoluble polycomplexes while in acid media (pH ≈3) the appearance of soluble polycomplexes is possible. From the experimental data it is established that a decisive role in the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes is played by the interaction of the ionized ionogenic groups of the polycation with the ionized surface silanol groups of the sol, the composition of the polycomplexes being determined by the degree of ionization both of the silanol groups of the sol and the polybase units. The compositions of the polycomplexes formed and the character of change in these compositions are studied as a function of the pH of the medium. Models of the structure of the particles of the soluble and insoluble polycomplexes are proposed and discussed. © 1984.
