Аннотация:The results of investigations of the low atmosphere thermal stratification above Moscow by means of the sodar sounding are presented. The synchronous observations made by three sodars at various points clearly demonstrate an obvious influence of the urban “heat island” effect on the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) above Moscow. The more is the distance from the city center to peripheries the more is the occurrence probability of surface inversions. Vice versa a probability of the thermal convection reduces this direction. The differences between various places usually appear in the morning and evening hours, whereas at noon in summer the convective stratification exists as a rule everywhere.
The sounding across Moscow by means of moving sodar was made as well. It demonstrates that a nocturnal inversion’s top above the city has a dome form. The dome is usually located just above the city center. Other words, the thickness of surface inversions at night is slightly more in the center than at city peripheries.
The results of sodar sounding in different big cities in the world are presented here in brief as well.
