An expression for the frequency of elastic collisions in the form of an expansion in reduced temperature T* is derived for the Lennard-Jones potential in the quasiclassical approximation. The zero-order approximation (T* → 0) takes into account the effect of the potential attraction branch alone, whereas the first-order approximation is associated with the effect of the potential well. It has been shown that for temperatures of interest for the expansion of supersonic jets we may restrict ourselves to the calculation of the collision frequency in the zero-order approximation. © 2005 by Allerton Press, Inc.
