Underground urban ‘heat island’ below Moscow city and dynamics of the soil temperatureстатья

- Аннотация: The measurements of the soil temperature at different depths in Moscow city and its suburbs since the end of the XIX century have been analyzed. At Moscow University this parameter is measured synchronously since 1955 at two locations: both below usual tunicle area, and below special naked area of 12×20 m2 plottage up to the depth of 320 cm below the ground. As it is shown the soil temperature in Moscow city at any depth from 20 to 320 cm, as well as the air temperature, has been increased during last 114 years. Besides, this increase during last half a century was much quicker at the University below the naked area (with a rate nearly of +0.04 ºC/year) than below usual tunicle area (+0.01 ºC/year only). The underground urban ‘heat island’ has been noted in Moscow region because the soil temperature is 0.5-1.0 ºC (even up to 1.5-2.0 ºC in the city center) higher inside the city than at rural zone outside it. This phenomenon which has been detected at any depth up to 320 cm is closely connected with well-known ‘heat island’ in the ground air layer. Probable explanation of it is more heat flux into the soil from the urban atmosphere.
