Аннотация:An approach for estimating stresses in the upper layers of the Earth's crust based on wellbore data regarding natural shear fractures is described in the paper. The concept of critically stressed fractures serves as a basis for the approach due to usage of special well logging techniques providing indirect information on stresses acting on natural fractures in the vicinity of the well. It is shown that existence of critically stressed fractures in the vicinity of the well may lead to local variations in effective elastic moduli. As a result, information on elastic moduli local variations caused by fractures provides an understanding of stresses around the well. A straightforward approach to numerical analysis of these variations is presented in the paper alongside with an example of successful application of the discussed approach for stress reconstruction along the scientific drillhole in Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone. It is shown that stress reconstruction based on natural fractures’ analysis provides the results being in agreement with stresses reconstructed using classical approaches – wellbore breakout and leak-off tests analysis.
