Аннотация:The sodar sounding in the lowest 800 m air layer is carried out at Moscow University since 1988. The results of long-term continuous monitoring of the thermal stratification are presented here in brief. Comparisons with direct measurements of temperature profiles usually demonstrate good coincidence between typical images of turbulent structures on sodar records and a sign of the vertical temperature gradient with an accuracy nearly of 0.2-0.3 0C per 100 m. According to the sodar data for ten years the occurrence probability of both surface inversions and slightly stable stratification consists of 40 % in Moscow. The probability of convection is nearly half as much. Synoptic conditions clearly affect the thermal stratification, leading to more or less probability of various types. To investigate spatial particularities of stratification in Moscow and suburbs the mobile sodar on a lorry was used. The sodar data about the thermal stratification should be periodically tested by direct measurements of temperature in low atmosphere. The combined measuring systems including sodar and radiosondes or tethered balloons with common programme software can be perspective in future for continuous studying of a low atmosphere’s fine structure. When sodar operates alone its data about the thermal structure can be accepted as reliable only for long-term periods.
