Experiments are performed with a quasi-equilibrium tropical circulation model (QTCM) in order to assess its ability to simulate the tropical interannual variability of meteorological parameters and tropical-extratropical teleconnections. The QTCM outputs are compared with the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and with the outputs of the ARPEGE general circulation model. Experiments with QTCM are performed for the period from 1948 to 1997. Seasonal and interannual variability characteristics, the propagation of anomalies of meteorological characteristics in QTCM and ARPEGE, and the atmospheric response to El Niño are studied. This model demonstrates high quality of simulation of the atmospheric fields in the tropics comparable to that of the full atmospheric general circulation models. Tests of model sensitivity to different boundary conditions and different parameters are performed. It is demonstrated that the amplitude of the response to equatorial Pacific processes is largely influenced by the parameters specified in the model and by inclusion of land and intraseasonal variability.
