Аннотация:‘Blends’ and ‘paronymy’ are different but related notions. Blending, two words merging into one, implies that the new word bears partial similarity of form to both of the deriving stems. It is often the case that the deriving words themselves display certain similarity in their sound caul. Paronyms have been studied in terms of their form, semantics, function and stylistic potential. Scholars make an emphasis on the phenomenon of paronymic attraction, two or more words that are similar in their sound caul being intentionally brought together into a close context for extra euphony, persuasiveness or expressivity. When blends-neologisms are used in speech, the listener is supposed to actively participate in the interpretation of the message, relying on some background knowledge, but if the speaker anticipates some difficulties, both the new blend and the deriving words can be used in the same context to show how the word-formation model works and what meanings and connotations might be implied.
