Аннотация:AbstractThe study deals with the role of early developed Russia'sregions, along with the corresponding concepts. The olderregions are regarded as those at a certain age, developmentlevel and of a certain economic type, chiefly industrial andagricultural, concentrated in the European part of today'sRussia, especially in its historic cores. The changes in theirposition and perception, associated with political, economical, social and demographical shifts, which affected thecountry's space before and after the collapse of the USSR,are analyzed. It is shown that under dominating processesof spatial polarization and shrinkage, the older regions alsoexperience a dissection, mainly along the center-peripheryaxis. This is illustrated by two specific case studies in CentralRussia around Moscow and in the area between Moscowand St. Petersburg. Finally, four alternative strategicscenarios for the areas of concern are presented, dependenton the attitude to the question of their revival: a) accelerationof shrinkage for reasons of economy; b) an orderlyretreat from selected hopeless old areas; c) deterrence oftheir decay; and d) search and enhancing of a returndevelopment wave.
