[1] Arkhipov V. Y. First record of wilson's snipe (gallinago (g.) delicata) in russia and comments on its taxonomic status // Зоологический журнал. — 2009. — Vol. 88, no. 9. — P. 1146–1149. A Wilson’s snipe adult male Gallinago (g.) delicata (Ord 1825) was observed in June 9, 2007 nearby the Anadyr airport, Chukotka, Russia. The next day in the same location, “drumming” sounds of this bird were recorded using a MD recorder. The “drumming” sound characteristics of seven Wilson’s snipes were compared with those in eight males of common snipes Gallinago gallinago (Linnaeus 1758) from different parts of their ranges. The common snipe has stable characteristics of the “drumming” sound throughout its breeding range; they were clearly different from Wilson’s snipe sounds. The “drumming” sound of the adult male recorded in Anadyr corresponded to these sounds in other Wilson’s snipes but not to sound haracteristic of the common snipe. Thus, this is the first record of Wilson’s snipe in Russia. This observation provides a reliable evidence against the hypothesis that Wilson’s snipe and common snipe have two extreme phenotypes in the eastern USA and Western Europe, respectively, related to their common ring-shaped Holarctic range. The data obtained sug- gest that Wilson’s snipe and common snipe should be considered as independent species.
