Аннотация:Speech rate of academic bilinguals is critically assessed from the linguistic, cognitive and sociocultural perspectives. Reading rates of 20 Russian and 20 Chinese students suggest that code-shifting effect is significant for shifting from the accent-based rhythm of English to the syllable-based rhythm of Mandarin. Slow down may be socioculturally relevant as it affects the social attractiveness of speakers.
