Аннотация:The application of organic materials such as manures, biochars, composts and municipal biosolids, traditionally used as nutrient sources, as a means to increase the cation exchange capacity, to promote microbiological activity, and to improve the physical properties and fertility of soils to facilitate phytoremediation is highlighted in this article. These organic materials applied to soil can also decrease the bioavailability of metals and metalloids in polluted soils by enhancing adsorption, complexation, restoration, and evaporation processes. The addition of partially decomposed organic substances, however, may mobilize heavy metals due to the formation of chelating soluble organic compounds that may increase contamination of the natural waters. The possible risk of future release of pollutant metals on the decomposition of the added organic matter may potentially be mitigated by repeated applications of the organic amendments, thus providing an effective ongoing utilization of organic to facilitate carbon accumulation and enhance waste control effectiveness.
