Аннотация:In polygynous ruminants, vocal performances represent an important part of male advertising behaviour during the rutting period. In male impala (Aepyceros melampus), a clearly defined rutting period exists only in seasonal climate zones. We applied passive acoustic monitoring to estimate impala vocal activity throughout the one-month rutting period in Namibia. We calculated the vocal activity as the average number of bouts of rutting calls per hour per night. We compared the vocal activity during three phases of the rut, start, active and fading, and on an hourly basis. On average, male impala produced 6.63 bouts/hour during the rut, increasing to 12.65 bouts/hour during the active phase. For the first time, male impala rutting vocal activity has been monitored acoustically. These results may serve as referential data for future comparisons with year-round breeding impala populations of tropical zones and ecoacoustical monitoring of African landscapes.
