Аннотация:Surface faulting belongs to natural phenomena that can be hardly counteracted and most of regulations either prohibit or, at least, do not recommend construction at the sites crossed by active tectonic faults. However, trunk pipelines, other transportation systems, bridges, hydraulic schemes sometimes can notbypass such sites. Special countermeasures are implemented to avoid or to minimize negative consequences of the design displacement. Nevertheless, since it can not be excluded that the displacement value used for the design of such countermeasures will be exceeded, the residual risk associated with such scenario should be estimated. The design displacement assessment is based either on relationshipsbetween expected earthquake magnitude and/or rupture length and maximal displacement or on the detailed study of active fault that crosses the construction site. Uncertainties provided by both approaches are discussed along with their effect on the assessment of the occurrence probability of displacementexceeding the design value. Besides, some contradictions of the probabilistic fault displacement hazard analysis (PFDHA) application for the design practice, the relationships between the offsets correspondingto the Strength-Level Earthquake and those corresponding to the Ductility-Level Earthquake in particular, will be pointed out.
