Аннотация:
Burial mounds (kurgans) dating back to the Catacomb culture of the Bronze Age have been studied in the desert-steppe zone of the Southern Ergeni Upland (the Republic of Kalmykia). According to radiocarbon dating, the kurgans studied were constructed 4410 ± 100, 4260 ± 120, 120 ± 70, and 3960 ± 40 BP. It is found that the period from 4500 to 4000 BP in the studied region was marked by increasing aridity of the climate. This process was accompanied by a decrease in the thickness of humus horizon, soil salinization, accumulation of carbonates in the upper part of the profile, and enhanced soil erosion. As a result, a paleoenvironmental crisis took place in the end of the third millennium BC. Copyright © 2005 by MAIK "Nauka/Iterperiodica" (Russia).
