Аннотация:
Paleosols of more than 300 archaeological monuments (burial mounds) dating back to the Latest Neolithic, Bronze, Early Iron, and Middle Ages (from the 4th millennium BC to the 14th century AD) have been studied in different natural zones within the Lower Volga basin. On the basis of the data obtained, Kovda’s concept about the Holocene evolution of the soils in this area is substantiated, chronological intervals of particular stages of pedogenesis are revealed, and climatic fluctuations during the historical period are reconstructed. It is shown that soil evolution in this area is controlled mainly by the degree of natural drainage of the territory. This factor affects the direction and rate of the elementary soil processes that changed under the impact of the centennial dynamics of the climatic humidity.
