Аннотация:
Paleosols buried under burial mounds of the Latest Neolithic, Bronze, and Early Iron ages and the Medieval epoch (from the fourth millennium BC to the 14th century AD) have been investigated in the steppe zone of southern Russia. New data on the character of steppe pedogenesis and century-long variations in various soil properties and processes are considered. Paleosol data make it possible to reconstruct the dynamics of environmental conditions in the studied region for the last 6000 years. It is established that a paleoecological crisis took place in this region about 4000 years ago; the Medieval climatic optimum dates back to the 12th-14th centuries AD. The role of paleoenvironmental conditions in the life of ancient farmers and cattle breeders is discussed. The correlation of environmental and historic events that took place in the steppe zone of southern Russia in the past with the environmental history of other regions of Eurasia is suggested.
