Аннотация:An increase in the volume of production and consumption of passenger car, truck, and bicycle tires
leads to a need for their reprocessing and utilization. Incineration of worn tires leads to the emission of toxic
gases (H2S, COS, CH3SH, SO2, NOx), heavy metals, and solid particles with fume gases and to the formation
of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic and heterocyclic compounds. The disposal of spent tires causes severe
damage to the environment because of pollution of air, soil, and groundwater. The main procedure used for
reprocessing of worn tires is pyrolysis. It yields pyrolysis oils, gaseous products, and semicoke. Their purifi -
cation and modifi cation allow production of valuable petrochemical raw materials and activated carbon. The
formation of sulfur-containing compounds, caused by the presence of sulfur in the feedstock, considerably
deteriorates the quality of the pyrolysis products obtained, which aff ects their subsequent use. The infl uence
that the pyrolysis rate, kind of feedstock, kind of reactor used, and reprocessing conditions (temperature, feedstock
amount, pressure, presence of a catalyst) exert on the qualitative and quantitative composition of sulfurcontaining
compounds formed in the gas phase, pyrolysis oil, and semicoke is considered. The principles and
mechanisms of the degradation of the vulcanized feedstock are described.
