Some of the facts and ideas relevant to this work were communicated in a series of presentations made by one of the co-authors in Moscow (Moscow University, Institute of Geochemistry, Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences), and in universities of Togliatti and Samara, at the scientific session on 150th anniversary of V.I. Vernadsky (12-14 March, 2013).
V.I. Vernadsky formulated a number of important fundamental problems related to structure and function of the biosphere [19, 20].
Among those problems, were (1) the issues of typology of the matter in the biosphere and (2) the issues of biogenic migration of chemical elements in the biosphere.
In the studies of Au nanoparticles and their interaction with aquatic plants, it was found the biomass of aquatic plants can immobilize Au from the aquatic medium [14].
Also, it was found that the biodetritus in aquatic system can immobilize a number of chemical elements (La, Ce, Cr and Co) from the aquatic medium [15].
This line of research was continued in our joint project together with U.S. chemists at University of Massachusetts in the U.S.A.
In this joint research, it was found that the biomass and mortmass of a number of species of plants can immobilize a series of other chemical elements, e.g. Cu [5]. These new experimental data were analyzed together with a broad range of data from the scientific literature on interactions among biomass, various organic substances and metals.
The result of this analysis is developing a new typology of the main types of the matter (substances) in the biosphere [10-13].
In his publications, V.I. Vernadsky discussed the two main types of the matter in the bio-sphere [19, 20]. In addition to these two types of the matter, recently it was suggested [10-13] to consider also a third type of the matter. A tentative name for this third type was suggested, ELM (the ex-living matter) [10-13].
One of the key functions of this third type of matter is the immobilization of toxic chemical elements including heavy metals. This immobilization is a process which contributes to detoxification of the toxic elements and chemicals in the biosphere. The immobilization decreases the bioavailability of the toxic elements.
The new findings provided additional evidence in support for some previous publications which formulated the theory of water self-purification in aquatic ecosystems [9].
The new data and their analysis contributed to elucidation of the fundamental problem of chemical-biotic (chemical - biological) interactions in the biosphere [1-18].

Abstract:
The authors obtained and reviewed new experimental data and applied them to formulation of some additions to the concepts developed by V.I.Vernadsky on the biosphere, namely: (1) the issues of typology of the matter in the biosphere and (2) the issues of biogenic migration of chemical elements in the bio-sphere. Some new facts on the role of biogenic substances in the biosphere were analyzed in this presenta-tion, which in turn leads to a contribution to better understanding of the biosphere.
