Аннотация:Sound producing in sexually mature three-spot gourami Trichopodus trichopterus has been studied when the fish reacted to agar-agar pellets containing classical taste substances and amino acids. Sounds (clicks) were produced irregularly (only in 14.6% of all trials), but were recorded when using all types of pellets. The average number of sounds varies from 1.5–4.0 for pellets with proline, norvaline, threonine, and sodium chloride to 8.0–9.5 for pellets with glutamine, arginine, and citric acid. Sounds were produced continuously or in series at short intervals, the maximum number of sounds – 31. The sounds were produced less frequently in response to the same types of pellets in the three-spot gourami, the maximum number of sounds (clicks) was almost half as much comparing to that in pearl gourami, studied earlier. Appearance and number of sounds was not related to the pellet palatability, but closely correlated with pellet retention time (quick touches or short holdings of the pellets with the lips), observed in 35.9% of the trials. The average number of touches of one pellet by lips was 3.0–8.6 in the trials with different test substances, the maximum number exceeded 20. The sporadic nature and close correlation of the appearance of sounds with the manifestation of motor actions by fish in response to pellets suggests the absence of a signal function in the generated sounds.
