Precision ERS-2 SAR data were used for observation of Caspian coastal area evolution caused by rise of the sea level and to study coastal modifications caused by fluctuations of the sea level. Multitemporal images of Kalmykia shore and Damchiksky part of Astrakhansky Biosphere Reserve have been generated and analyzed. Among the discovered prominent differences are: the area of open water surfaces of inland water reservoirs decreased in large extent; soil near the reservoirs borders have had high value of sigma-naught because of a rising a dense of meadow and reed and an overgrowth; the square of coastal lands with low moisture increased; reservoirs with open water surfaces, which appeared here because of rise of subsoil waters along sea shore, are located now in another places then earlier; configuration of some islands and small shore forms have modified; water vegetation area near the border of estuary decreased
