Аннотация:Specialized fungi have been isolated in and around the remains of the Chernobyl atomic energy station (ChAES). To cope such environment these fungi worked out resistance mechanisms such as asexuality, synthesis of melanin like pigments, flexible morphology, and growth under limited nutrient content in the habitat. Multitrophic in nature, they possess high phenotypic plasticity. Adaptation of Purpureocillium lilacinum ChAES strains to low glucose (0.2%) in the medium was coupled with an increased resistance to oxidative stress. It seems to be a consequence of metabolic adaptation, and a result of melanin pigments protection. These traits might be a result of genome variations important for elucidation of stress-response elements and for understanding the evolution of extremophiles
