Аннотация:An image of war as a product of historical memory, as a rule, is created on the basis not only of the personal letters and memoirs, but by the media. However the question of what place are occupied in these sources some emotions and what is a rational perceptions of contradictory information, still remains open. In the Spanish-American war of 1898, in spite of the abundance of documentary materials, a stream of sensational information, shocking and disturbing the feelings of ordinary people, had a decisive influence on the minds of the contemporaries. Especially prominent were the publications of “yellow” press, sparking the imagination of the general readers by scandalous news appeared regularly on the pages of “New York Journal” and “New York World”, owned by W. Hearst and J. Pulitzer. They portrayed the Spanish as the cruel and bloodthirsty murders who committed a lot of atrocities over the Cuban rebels and civilians. With the help of such periodicals was created the sustainable mythologized image of the Spanish-American war, expressed primarily in emotionally negative image of the “enemy”, on the one hand, and with other – the excessive glorification of the heroic deeds of the American military commanders and ordinary soldiers.
