Аннотация:The arrival of new types of media changes the social structure and sets new challenges for society in almost all spheres, including, not least, science and education. Throughout the 20th century and up to the present, Russian philological science has been actively studying language life in the context of the development of first electronic, then digital media, and has been dealing with issues of language education that meets the needs of the new information society. One scholar actively working in this area was Professor of Lomonosov MSU Yuri Rozhdestvensky (1926–1999); he was awarded the Lomonosov Prize (1995) for creating a series of works “Fundamental Theory of Language for the Post-Industrial Information Society.” An integral part of his language theory is the theory of rhetoric. The purpose of this article is to acquaint the readers with Rozhdestvensky’s rhetorical theory, which he called “modern rhetoric,” to show how modern rhetoric responds to the challenges of the information society and what goals of modern education it helps achieve. The article first considers positive and negative trends of the digital era, then discusses the challenges that the new era poses, and finally shows how modern rhetoric helps solve new problems facing education.
