The article makes an attempt to answer the question what the
―cancellation of Russian culture‖ essentially is. The authors proceed from the
hypothesis that the phenomenon under this name is, most likely, part of the
strategic communication of Western countries and can be called anti-branding. In
order to answer the question posed, the concepts of ―cancel culture‖ and ―antibranding‖ are first considered, then it is substantiated why anti-branding of
Russian culture can be considered an effective method of damaging the image of
Russia, and finally, based on the data from content analysis of Western media
resources, ―cancellation of Russian culture" is explored in terms of the actors of the
abolition, the grounds for the abolition and the conditions of the ultimatum. The
authors come to the conclusion that the phenomenon under invvestigation
represents anti-branding of the Russian state by causing image and material
damage to the strongest component of the Russian brand (and therefore brand as a
whole) by means of excluding Russia from the cultural field of the West,
presenting Russian culture as unfree, dependent on state, as well as disgracing
cultural figures of Russia.
