Аннотация:The adsorption of surfactants in interstack galleries of the natural layered aluminosilicate Na + montmorillonite was studied. By the methods of X-ray diffraction and computer simulation, a change in the interlayer spacing of the clay was determined and the structure of the formed layers was identified in relation to the type and amount of the modifier. Surfactants containing two long aliphatic chains form ordered clusters on the surface of silicate sheets. In these clusters, a portion of the molecules are chemically bonded to the clay, while the rest are held by van der Waals forces. As a consequence, the total amount of the compound sorbed by the clay may exceed the cation-exchange capacity of the clay mineral. The compatibility of the modified clay with polyolefins was investigated depending on the structure of the modifier layer being formed. It was demon- strated that layers with a more perfect structure do not provide exfoliation of the clay or marked intercalation of polymer chains into the interstack gallery. The optimal structure of the modifier layer was established that allowed intercalation of PE chains into the interstack galleries of the clay and even its exfoliation into the maleic anhydride-grafted PP when composites were prepared by melt mixing.
