Аннотация:Variations in types of soils within the area, to secure habitat diversity, were analysed in the north-western part of European Russia. In typical boreal forest ecosystems, soil properties play important role in formation of plant communities, their species and structure diversity. Forest soils differ greatly in texture, total elements, organic matter, acidity, exchangeable cations. Improving of soil properties in a range: podzol, podzolic soil, derno-podzolic soil, brown earth, pararendzina leads to growing diversity and changes in floristical composition of phytocenoses, followed by changing of pine and spruce forest by mixed and birch forests. In PCA ordination species diversity, richness and evenness of trees, shrubs and vascular plants were closely connected with each other, and were represented by the first principal component. They were strongly correlated to the thickness of A1 horizon, pHH2O and pHCaCl2 in organic, surface and subsurface mineral horizons. The only bryophyte species richness and diversity were directly related to the thickness and weight of organic horizon, soil exchangeable acidity, and inversely related to the thickness of A1 horizon and pH. Thus, the ordination of the major species diversity variables was highly related to soil pH, suggesting that pH is the best soil related predictor of species diversity parameters. Our study supports the hypothesis that vascular plants show a broad-scale response to soil acidification.
