Аннотация:
In this chapter, we reviewed pine forest types and distributions in Inner Asia, one of the largest drylands over the world. We found that among all of the tree species in the semi-arid region in Inner Asia, pine species are main in the arid timberline. In general, drought-limited tree growth and regeneration, as evidenced by dendrochronological studies. Climate warming also accelerates pathogen and insect attacks as well as fire frequency, which led to tree mortality. Different climatic patterns and human impact histories have also led to different threats to pine forests in the northern and southern subregions of this region. In the temperate southern subregion, pine (including Pinus tabulaeformis and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) forests are distributed in small patches and facing recession from the semi-arid region. However, in the hemi-boreal northern subregion, expansions of pine forest, both upward caused by climate warming and horizontally, caused by reduction in human disturbance have been observed. Our study provides insights regarding the regional and species-specific management strategies for active adaptation to climate change for this region and potentially similar forests world-wide. More nature reserves for relict patches of Chinese pine and fire prevention for Scotch pine were suggested. © 2012 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
