Activated platelets could be divided into different subpopulations with different functions and properties. There are subpopulation with low level and spiking calcium dynamics, with intact mitochondria, without phosphatidylserine (PS) on the surface (PS-negative subpopulation); and platelets with higher and static intracellular calcium concentration, with collapsed mitochondria and with PS (PS-positive subpopulation). Although calcium is believed to be important for PS exposure, there is little information about the relationship between calcium dynamics and PS externalization.Here we used real-time single-cell calcium imaging techniques employing confocal microscopy together with computational systems biology modelling in order to elucidate the sequence of events leading to PS exposure
